VIDEO: Wrapping Beehives for Winter

Wrapping your beehives in a black plastic or tar paper is an effective way to increase the amount of sunlight (heat) absorbed by the hives during frigid winter days. Warmer hives have a greater chance of survival because 1) it reduces stress on the bees and 2) stressed bees tend to eat more, expediting the rate at which they go through winter stores.

In the following video, I discuss how we wrap our hives at Twist & Sprout Farms and touch on a few other methods for overwintering bees, specifically the function of quilt boxes.
